As anyone who has owned a truck knows, all trucks have their issues. The Dodge Ramwhile an overall dependable truck, has its own set of problems that may crop up, getting in the way of work, play, and dipping into your bank account as well.

This article focuses on the full size pickup formerly known as the Dodge Ram pickup and now known as the RAM pickup. When it starts to go, it wreaks havoc on any and every function that requires electrical input. When the TIPM starts to go out:. Most of these issues make it hard, or just plain embarrassing, to drive the truck, but the unreliability of airbag deployment is a life-threatening danger.

Sometimes you can correct the issues by re-flashing and re-configuring the modules, or replacing the relays. Complete replacement is the only option in many cases. If your or other RAM in this model year range stalls when stopping, stalls at idle, or seizes up unexpectedly, you may have one of the most commonly reported problems for these trucks — cam and lifter failure.

This issue can potentially affect all late models. All cams wear out eventually, but a huge number of RAM owners report severe problems with well under 75, miles on the vehicle. The most common report is of the 3 or 2 cylinder misfiring, in combination with lifters seizing up.

In these cases, the cam often shows premature wear and one or more lobes may be heavily grooved and damaged. Unfortunately, this problem is often prohibitively expensive to fix once the truck is out of warranty.

The availability of replacement parts is an issue too, as the problem is so widespread that the required components are often on backorder, even as recently as One of the most irritating RAM problems also plagues other model years. Body structure should be the least of your worries if your car is less than 10 or so years old, yet s are known for less-than-stellar construction. Some of the issues on newer RAM trucks include:. In addition to being ugly, body structure problems can quickly compromise vehicle safety.

Multiple coolant leaks are one of the more common RAM problems, as well as affecting model years The sources of coolant leaks can be gaskets, the heater hose, hoses to the water pump or problems with the water pump itself. This can be one of the more irritating problems to fix because the source of the leak is not always apparent. That and the fact that these leaks tend to recur also means repair costs are tough to estimate. Problems in the transmission range from causing slight annoyance to making the truck dangerous to drive.

There are a variety of ways transmission issues show up in these trucks, including:. In many cases, both owners and dealerships have a hard time diagnosing and fixing these critical issues.

Even when the problem is pinpointed correctly, owners have reported frustration with necessary parts being on backorder for months at a time. Transmission issues are one of the leading reasons owners trade their trucks in or pursue lemon law claims. While many of the same problems persist across generations, some issues affect Dodge Rams more than others.

The common problems range from quick fixes to significant part replacements that may not be worth the time and money if your Ram is toward the older end of the generation. A bad or failing manifold leads to decreased engine performance, and broken manifold bolts are common in Dodge Ram s of all ages.

The most common symptom of broken or degraded bolts is a ticking sound on cold starts, frequently heard from the passenger side of the truck.

The source of the sound is a cold manifold with damaged bolts, which allows gases to seep around the bolts rather than through the exhaust system as designed. Luckily, this issue is relatively easy to fix or have repaired.

However, some owners report having to get their manifold bolts replaced multiple times. There appears to be a real quality control issue for Dodge in these bolts, and owners have been stuck with the bill. The cost of repair depends on how many new bolts are required and whether old bolts are difficult to remove. Sometimes the bolt head will degrade so much that it breaks off, leaving the rest of the bolt stuck and in need of expertise to remove.

There are a significant number of owners dealing with Dodge Ram transmission problems, and Dodge Ram transmission shifting problems are incredibly common as well. Transmission issues — particularly Dodge Ram transmission problems — are equally common.Had a code P throw my check engine light for me, so since I needed to replace a solenoid and this is a pretty common dodge transmission, I thought I might put this up here so maybe someone else can benefit from my experience.

Job was pretty simple. Took about 2 hours start to finish. Unlike some transmissions, the solenoids are not individually serviceable and require removing the valve body. The solenoid assembly sits on top of the valve body.

You'll need to get a new pan gasket and I recommend replacing both oil filters in the transmission while you have it apart. These transmissions do not have drain plugs on the pans, so the only way to drain them is to remove the pan. This tends to make a little bit of a mess, so have your drain pan and some towels ready.

I like to remove all of the bolts down the sides of the pan, then remove all but the center bot on the front and rear. While holding the rear of the pan, remove the rear bolt and use a putty knife to get between the pan and the transmission housing.

Lower the rear of the pan and let it pour out into the drain pan until it slows. When the trans fluid slows enough that it's almost stopped, hold the pan against the trans with one hand while removing the front bolt with the other.

Lower the pan, empty it int the drain pan and set it aside. First we need to remove the black plastic filter housing. Remove the bolt, set it aside and wiggle the filter off. On the top side is a way connector which needs to be undone. Release the red safety tab slide downwardpress the black release tab at the top of the connector and release the white locking bar.

It might take a little wiggle, but the connector should come right off.

With the connector off, there are six bolts holding the valve body up. I circled their locations in red in the picture. Remove them. Once they're all out, it may take a little wiggling, but the valve body will drop out. The solenoid pack is held on by the bolts located in side the red box. After the new solenoid pack is in place and lined up, start the bolts and run them all down to about finger tight. There are arrows embossed into the valve body.

These bolts MUST be torqued first. Lubricate the seal on around the connector with petroleum jelly. Position, align and reinstall the valve body into the transmission. Seat the valve body and install a bolt or two to hold it. Now is a good time to replace the filters.Does your transmission have strange problems with shifting and unexpected error messages on the dashboard? The shift solenoid is a part that causes a lot of strange problems in automatic transmissions.

There are a few ways to find out if your shift solenoid is bad. Replacing a shift solenoid is often costly so you want to make sure that you are not replacing a functional shift solenoid. In this guide, you will find everything you need to know about transmission shift solenoids, how to locate the problem and how to replace the parts. The transmission control unit is getting information from the engine, vehicle speed sensors, and other parameters.

The shift solenoids are spring loaded with a coil inside. If the transmission control unit is not able to open, the shift solenoid with help the power or ground, and it will store a trouble code in the transmission control unit on the affected shift solenoid.

There are a few different symptoms of a faulty shift solenoid. In the table below, you will find the most common symptoms, causes, and fixes.

Common Issues With Dodge Ram 1500 Trucks

The most common symptom of a damaged transmission shift control or wiring is a warning light on your dashboard. This is often a check engine light or a transmission warning light. If you see a warning light on your dashboard, read the trouble codes with an OBD2 scanner and start your troubleshooting there. To do so, you should read and research the trouble codes carefully to understand the problem before starting the troubleshooting.

A lot of the shift solenoid codes could be solved by trying to make a transmission fluid replacement or a carring out a transmission flush. A transmission fluid change is often not that expensive and it can solve a lot of problems with your transmission. If you get an electrical or stuck code, the easiest way to check this is with an OBD2 reader with the function to test the shift solenoid by forcing the transmission control unit to open and close.

If you do not get both 12 volts and ground — you may have a wiring problem or a faulty TCM transmission control unit. If you get 12 volts and ground and the shift solenoid trouble code keeps coming back after you have erased it, you probably have a faulty shift solenoid. If the shift solenoid itself has an internal error, the best way is to replace just the shift solenoid if possible. In some cases, you can clean the shift solenoid if you find a lot of dirt inside of it.

As I mentioned before, a transmission fluid change or a transmission flush can solve some shift solenoid trouble codes, so you could try that out first. To replace a shift solenoid, you have to remove the transmission fluid pan to reach the faulty solenoid. It is located in the valve body. Always check this with your dealer before you start to remove the transmission pan. The replacement cost of a shift solenoid replacement depends a lot on what car model you have.

You have to replace the whole solenoid pack and that is often expensive. When you are replacing a shift solenoid or shift solenoid pack, you should always also replace the transmission fluid and filter.

The price is also affected a lot depending on what parts and transmission fluid you are using. Aftermarket parts are often cheaper than original parts, but often not of the same quality. The shift interlock solenoid is on all modern vehicles, and works in conjunction with the brake light switch and neutral safety switch. The Dodge Ram has 5 problems reported for transmission failure. Dealers will also test the BTSI operation, replacing the solenoid as necessary. View Details.
